Parakeets are very loving and sweet animals. With the correct care and training you can make them a perfect addition to your family. On this page you can find ways to take care of your parakeets as well as training techniques.
Pairing Process
One of the most important things with parakeets is they get lonely. If you’re someone who has a busy schedule but still wants a parakeet this for you. Parakeets need a lot of interaction. If you cannot always give your full attention then pairing may be the way to go. The paring process is buying two parakeets instead of one so that way your parakeet won’t get lonely when you’re not around. Parakeets prefer to be in pairs.
Attention
When you have parakeets you need to make sure you have time to pay attention to them. They like to be played with and held. Without this part of the training they’ll feel abandoned. Which can cause then to pluck their feathers from stress or to cry out.
Food, Treats, and Water
Parakeets are big on food. When handling food you want to try different brands at first and many different blends. Most parakeets prefer seeds over fruits and nut mixes but it really depends on your bird. The food and water need to be changed DAILY .Treats also play a big role in parakeet care. I give my parakeets one treat every two days so they don’t expect treats every single day.
Food I Use: Premium parakeet food it can be found at your local Walmart.
Housing
Parakeets want room to get around. If you have one parakeet you don’t need as big of a cage. If you have two + it is preferred that you have a bigger cage so they have a lot of room to get around. In a parakeets cage you also want to include Sticks to climb on and many toys. My birds are living in an old dresser that we used chicken wire to turn into a bird cage and they have a ladder, a mirror (parakeets like to look at themselves), three long sticks to climb on, and a coconut house. I plan to get more toys for Christmas or pick them up on trips out to get food and treats.
Cleaning
Parakeets need a clean environment. I recommend cleaning out the cage every 3-4 days so they have a neat area. For my birds I use paper towels instead of newspaper because I believe it is less expensive and an easier clean up.
Covering
Before you go to bed you should cover your birds cage and uncover it when you wake up to help your birds get on a sleeping schedule.
Wings
Getting your parakeets wings clipped is optional and 100% up to you. I prefer to have mine clipped Incase they were to get out they wouldn’t be able to fly away.
Training
When training parakeets it is important that they training you do is the things you want your parakeets to do. If you would like to learn about parakeet training contact our email and I can give out pointers or training methods I think work best. There are one to many to list out here!
